Travelling with a motorhome, or a car and towed caravan opens up options that are not available to you if you are staying in other forms of accommodation. You've got all your own stuff with you, you can take a lot more with you, and you can bring other stuff back should you care to buy anything on your travels, subject to your vehicle's weight limits. You can choose, within limits of campsite availability, to make stops near to the places you want to visit. You can change the number and length of your stops depending on how interesting you find the places you visit, or to avoid bad weather. You can save a lot in the long term on the costs of other types of accommodation, and particularly if you're self-catering.
We’ve owned and rented both. We still ponder which is the best choice to own. The nearest we’ve got to an answer is that we would choose a caravan to own and tour with in Europe, but we enjoy renting motorhomes for touring North America’s more remote areas. Here’s our own checklist of the pros and cons:-
- Cheaper than motorhome, and more room inside.
- Park it up on site and leave it. Easier to visit places off site with car.
- Towing - not everyone fancies driving with or manoeuvring a towed caravan
- You need a fairly large/heavy/powerful car to safely tow your size of caravan.
- Out and about you’ve got easy access to all your facilities for roadside stops.
- Easier to manoeuvre.
- Cost of purchase and insurance.
- Large vehicle to get round narrow streets or park up when touring

If you're able to travel off season (Spring or Autumn) with your motorhome or caravan then the ACSI Camping Europe card offers substantial discounts at more than 2,800 sites across the Continent.
There are a number of motorhome hire companies operating on the North American continent. We've used the Cruise America and Cruise Canada motorhomes ( website link is for USA/Canada, there may also be a direct website for your country's booking outside North America). They can offer attractive deals on off season travel, and we've travelled quite cheaply in the Spring when touring in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico , Colorado and British Columbia(Canada).
